The Narsapur Lace Cluster has a large base of lace artisans. However, these skills are mostly traditional and are not geared towards commercial production. There is a need for re-skilling the artisans and imparting new skills in addition to pure lace making. the international and domestic markets for lace have evolved with time and are witnessing greater demand for hybrid lace products, made-ups and new product categories. At present, all such additional value added work such as stitching and embroidery is carried out outside of the Cluster. As a result, the Cluster becomes a job worker providing an input of lace to a final product that is being produced elsewhere.
It is crucial for the lace manufacturing industry in Narsapur to realign with the emerging trends in market demand and diversify products and thus skills sets. There is a need to build skills in terms of high end crocheting, garmenting, embroidery, other related areas as well as soft skills. This will enable the additional value to be captured within the Cluster.
Keeping this in view, training of artisans and other Cluster stakeholders by way of structured short duration programs plays an important role. This will enable the Cluster to move up the value chain in terms of more diversified product portfolio and achieve holistic growth of the Cluster and its stakeholders.
To address the current limitations of cluster in terms of lack of skilled manpower for the
production of high value added and diversified products ranging from fashion garments, accessories, made-ups and novelties.
Standardized training will be imparted in the areas of crochet lace making, garmenting and production, and various soft skills and enterprise development aimed at the overall capacity building of the women artisans.
